Friday June 17th: Decatur Beach Party
The kids were hungry by the time we got there so we bought buckets for each of them. The buckets had sunglasses, sandwiches, chips, juice, a shovel, and a kazoo. We ate ribs and drank canned Mojitos.
After our picnic dinner we headed down to play in the sand. The sand was great. It was really crowded at the entrance but if you went all the way to the back there was room to play. Ben and Nik built sandcastles and raced around. We were very glad we had brought somebeach toys.
Once the kids started getting tired we went to listen to the live music. The band played covers of 50's and 60's classics so it was fun for the kids to listen and dance.
Saturday June 16th: Piedmont Park and High Museum of Art
We went to Piedmont Park again on Saturday morning. The most amazing woman was playing the blues at the farm market. Her voice gave me goosebumps. I could have listened to her all day. http://www.lizbrownmusic.com/ Unfortunately the kids were tired and hungry and the carrots I bought as a snack would only hold them so long so we had to take off.
After their naps we went to the High Museum of Art to see the photography exhibit. The kids were tired so we just walked around quickly. Ben and I had fun playing "I spy".
Sunday June 17th: Bugs for Brunch - Atlanta Botannical Gardens
The Atlanta Botanical Gardens has a Giant Bugs and Killers Plants exhibit. There are giant statues of bugs all around the gardens. You can pick up a backpack at the front desk which gives you activities to do for each scultpture you find -- we played damsel fly tag, assasin bug hide and seek, counted the legs and body parts of the ants, and drew spider webs.
The gardens also have a fantastic kids area. We only got to see a little bit of it -- the sunflower water splash area. It was very needed - it was 95 with 95% humidity... hot hot hot. Ben and Nik had a great time playing in the water jets.
Yup. There was a chef cooking bugs - crickets, superworms, scorpions. Ben was horrified. Nik ate some mealworm bannana bread without flinching. I managed to get down one cricket with some grits. It tasted about how you would think a cricket would taste -- bitter and a combination of crunchy and gooey. GROSS. Ian ate a serving of BBQ superworms served over collard greens, "They were crunchy with a bitter finish that the chef described as walnutty."
After that snack we needed something more mainstream so we went and got cotton candy, snowcones, and popcorn. Phew. The kids ran around, tried hoola hoops, and got sweaty and tired.
