Late Arrival and a Cold Morning...

We arrived at the park entrance at just after 9pm after 11 hours on the road. The sun was just setting. The drive through the park was slow. As it was dusk, and hard to see, all of the animals in the park decided to try and cross Skyline Drive. We saw:
· Deer. Lots of deer.
· An owl that swooped above our car.
· A bat.
· A raccoon.
· A frog.
· A spotted skunk. The skunk insisted on walking in the middle of the road for several hundred yards in front of us.

The sunset views were incredible. Ben said, “Look Nik, it looks like a painting out your window!"

An hour later we arrived at MP 80 (Loft Mountain Campground) just as a terrible thunderstorm kicked up. After a few minutes of indecision we decided to press on to Lewis Mountain (the campground we had originally wanted to stay at) in the hopes that the rain would let up by the time we got there.

Sure enough, the rain let up quickly but this only added to our driving troubles. Steam was rising off the road making it difficult to see. Finally we arrived at the campground at 10:15… 12 hours after leaving home. We picked the first available campsite and set up our tent in the dark hoping for a good night's sleep.

The good night's sleep never came. The kids woke early the next morning cranky and exhausted. It was very cold (the kids were wearing jackets and toboggans) and the trip was beginning to feel like a fiasco. After several tantrum and much tears we finally rallied to the Byrd visitor center at Big Meadow hoping that to pick up some information about hikes and programs…
