For breakfast this morning I had a rice triangle stuffed with omeboshi plum, Japanese pickles and a sliced Japanese omelet with dipping sauce... Can you guess where Nikki and I went yesterday?
We went in search of a Japanese grocery store. We checked out Buford Highway Farmers Market. It is a HUGE grocery store (think Walmart size) that is half Mexican and half pan-Asian. The aisles are labeled by type of food and country of origin. So, for example, Japanese ice cream balls (mochi) sit next to Korean dumplings. We bought all sorts of treats.
Then we stopped by Ranch 99. It is a Japanese/?? store set in an area where all of the shops are Vietnamese and Korean. The have a more limited selection and better prices. They also have a bakery. We ate red bean paste buns still warm from the oven. Heavenly.
Afterwards we wandered around the little shops in the same plaza. Tiny gift shops that sell lucky bamboo, Buddha statues, garish waterfalls, and kitchy kawaii tchotchke. Neither store had a great housewares section or books so I may still need to try Tomato. Maybe on Friday.

I love those kind of grocery stores and can spend hours wandering and trying to figure out how to use stuff! This has inspired me to go to an ethnic grocery store TODAY!...or maybe just eat some sushi?
I love the Buford Highway Farmers Market, but I've never been to the Korean/Vietnamese stores where Ranch 99 is. I live almost 2 hours away from Atlanta, so we usually have to go to lots of places to make it worth a trip, so I definitely add that area to my list.
If you are into Kawaii a couple of places there sell it. There is a great stationary store that sells a lot of cute stuff.
