I took such PLEASURE in saying that to Ben this evening. He has been struggling with learning to read and it has dampened his love of books. In a fit of inspiration I went to a local comic book store and bought him a graphic novel called "Owly." It is unbelievably cute. In "Just a Little Blue" Owly decides to build a home for a bluebird but the bird refuses to move in thinking the home is a trap. The story is complex and emotional in the same way the Moomin series is. I read it this afternoon and I couldn't put it down. Ben got through 40 pages (of the 120 pg book). How you ask? The the story is told exclusively through pictures. His excitement in reading a huge book by himself was contagious.
The best part is that the author will be at the store on Saturday and Ben can get his book autographed.

He's on his way! Yeah!
How exciting! To have Ben attend a book signing will impress in his mind that authors are celebrities, which will heighten the importance of books in his mind and maybe help him to focus even more. We hold Hollywood up on a pedestal for our kids all too often and forget to point them at the true celebrities - those who give of themselves to others and those who inspire us with just text and sometimes images in an honest-to-goodness paper and ink book. I've never been as excited at a celebrity sighting while traveling in LA as I have talking and getting my book signed by real authors, such as Jimmy Carter, George R.R. Martin, and others.
