Melbourne Cup

We had a lovely day at the races. We did not go for as long as originally planned as Nik came down with the flu on Sunday afternoon and was really sick on Sunday and Monday. Today he was starting to feel a bit better by lunch so we felt OK leaving him with a sitter... by the time we got home he was back to normal so we felt greatly relieved. But enough about Nik... you want to see "d-ahr-bee" pictures...

Here's one more picture...

which endangered species of bird did you slaughter for that hat? :)

I am currently removing the hated whale from the ocean by eating minke whale burgers at the lucky pierrot burger chain in hokkaido... happy days!

You look great!
The derby agrees with you very well. You need to go to events like that more often.

Glad to hear that Nik is better.

And how did you like the race?
Did you put any bets?

Both of you look smashing!

Sorry that Nik got the flu. Hope it doesn't hit the rest of you.

I forgot to ask how you did at the betting window? Hope you came out ahead.

We didn't place any bets... not for lack of trying but because the line was 50 minutes! Even if we had, the two horses we would have bet on -- Harris Tweed and Roman Emperor -- did NOT do well. Roman Emperor started in the lead and faded, Harris Tweed started in the rear and stayed there.

The guys near us after the race won $24K!! Wow.

1st and second place were Shocking and Crime Scene. You can imagine the jokes on the evening news.

By the way the first four pictures are with our old camera, the last with our new camera.

Leo, I didn't slaughter it -- it was artfully perched on my head the whole day.

Do you know the name of the bird perched on your head all day?

Wow, people really dress up for the races in Australia! I've never been to a race. Do they dress up here in the US too? Anyway, you look smashing but I'm glad to hear you smashed no birds for your hat, but that it was perched on your head unmoving the whole time. I hope too it was quite constipated!

We've been to 1 race in the US and people were most definitely not dressed up for it... I think people get dressed up for the Kentucky Derby... but hats are not quite as mandatory.
