Black Bears, Smores, and Gnats... oh my!

The Lewis Mountain Campground was everything we were hoping for. Small (only 31 sites), close to everything, and quiet… it had that pretty Shenandoah looks of widely spaced oaks with grass growing between them. Lovely. The only problem was the swarms of gnats that descended each time the breeze let up... and our visitor...
The camp had a quasi-resident adolescent black bear. After never having seen a bear, I saw one 4 times in the last week. Every morning he would wander around on the edge of camp. On the last morning he was actually nosing around some of the tents at another site and Ian had to chase him away..

Camping with kids is fun. They love the closeness and the focus on just being together as a family. They love waking up all-together in the tent and eating camp food. Ben, for the first time, actually likes roasting marshmallows this year. He still won’t eat smores. Nikki loves smores (of course) but gets completely freaked out because his hands get so sticky. Me… I invented a new technique—stuffed marshmallows. Gooey, melted-chocolate filled, YUMMY.
