Luray Caverns

I have to admit, when I pulled up and saw what a tourist-trap this was I hesitated. It looks cheesy. And the fact that you can only take guided tours was off-putting, too. Don’t let the schlock put you off… this is definitely worth the stop.

The caverns are incredible. Neither words nor picture can describe how majestic (and HUGE) they are inside. The tour is a mile long and takes over an hour. There are still pools that reflect the ceiling such that they loop like deeper caves. There are towers where stalactites and stalagmites have joined that are as big around as an oak and as tall as a house. The formations grow in rivers, bubbles, streams, ribbons. They form the most amazing shapes. The look on Ben’s face when we walked in to this underground world that looked as foreign as anything he had ever seen was worth the price of admission alone. He was absolutely dumbstruck by the caverns… As for Nikki… at least he stayed pretty quiet so the rest of us could enjoy the tour. Wow. I can’t wait for Mammoth Caves!
