After the heroics of Moosilauke the kids needed a couple of days of laid-back fun.
We took one day off in North Conway and took the kids to see Ratatouille. Then we headed to the Crawford Notch Family Campground on the Saco River.
The campground has great tent sites – very isolated from each other and pretty. On our first night a black bear walked right behind our site. We didn’t have reservations so we did not have a lot of choice of campsites… either by the road or way in the back… not near the river like I had hoped.
We spent a morning on the Saco River. It was great. We usually have to tell the kids when we get to a stream – don’t throw rocks in the
stream, careful not to get wet. Here they got to spend the morning throwing as many rocks as they wanted and getting as wet as they wanted. We waded out to an island in the river and Ian and Ben waded around the whole island. Nikki even got brave enough to wade in with Ian. We would have stayed longer but a wicked thunderstorm drove us to our car.
We went strawberry picking outside of North Conway and we picked 5 pounds of the most beautiful, tastiest, sweetest strawberries I have had in years. The last few are sitting in a basket by my feet as I write and the smell is overpowering. We had the best camp dinner – ice cream, strawberries, and graham crackers.
Twice we drove to Washington… and twice it was socked in by clouds and rain despite partly-cloudy conditions everywhere else in the valley.
