Larry and Leah met us at the beach and the kids had an afternoon of down time – swimming, digging in the sand, and making friends. Ian and Larry decided to go for a swim, too while Leah and I sat on the shore. As we sat watching all the boys a light drizzle picked up. The sky was mostly blue and the rain was barely a mist so we decided to stay put. Suddenly a GIANT bolt of lightning and a crack of thunder opened up the sky directly over us. The lifeguard did not even get a chance to whistle, when all of the kids started shrieking and running from the water. A brisk wind blew in, thunder and lighting came down in quick succession, and the rain poured down in sheets. At first we hid under some pines… but then the lightning was so close we ran under the ranger’s hut After 15 minutes of torrential rain and sideways wind we decided to brave running for the cars to get our of the rain. As we drove into town (about .5 miles away) we realized what an impressive storm this had been. Little mini-tornados had pulled up giant trees by their roots and torn up fences, power lines, and windows.
The weather cleared for the late afternoon but more lines of rain and thunder blew through the campground all night long.
