Karate Classes
Ben loved the classes he took in North Carolina so we have been looking for a dojo here. On the recommendations of several neighbors I found a school that looked great and took Ben to a trial class.
Our teacher in North Carolina had a magic touch with kids. He had an easy style and kept the class moving forward and having fun. This teacher seemed like he was trying to force discipline and control on the class. At one point he was lecturing the kids because they didn't know their left from their right. THESE KIDS ARE 4-6 YEARS OLD! No need to lecture -- find a fun way to teach them. And don't tell the parents that they need to train the kids how to do proper pushups at home. I don't need any more homework in my life. So... I don't know what to do. Ben had fun and learned a lot but I didn't like it. I have tried suggesting swimming instead but Ben insists he really wants karate... I tried suggesting that we try a different dojo but no go on that either.
I talked to the guy over the phone today... He gave me this long spiel about how he screen which kids he admits into his classes and he turns away many kids who are not ready but he was really impressed by Ben and really wants Ben to start. Ben likes the classes; the teacher likes Ben; I don't like the teacher... what to do? I guess we can try 3 months and if Ben starts to not like it I can always pull him out and find someplace else.
A Ray of Sunshine
I took a photo of a rose on Acadia and I am playing around with it. I enlarged and printed a picture of the rose and I was playing with various layout and fabrics I had laying around. I had tried once before making a window with rolled edges and I decided to play with that again... it
was all going great until I was trimming the pink backing and accidentally cut through the facing fabric. ARGH! SO SO SO SO SAD. It was turning out so cute up until then. I was going to make it into a cute purse for a little girl...

You're amazing, making all those tooth fairy in bags in your oh-so-abundant spare time...
Doing the blog is a great way to keep in touch with Ian... And you might find, as I have, that you end up looking at your own life from a "reporter's" perspective instead of getting mired down everything. Anything and everything can become blogging "fodder." No matter how crummy the day might have been, hey, you can write about it! I'be been surprised how much more positive I am now that I'm blogging. It makes you look for the tidbits, the interesting stuff, and it give you a chance to have instant gratification in creating something--that you can't accidentally cut through!! (Although I hope I haven't just cursed myself--I don't want to accidentally delete an entry!)
If Ben likes the class, I say go for it... He'll certainly let you know if it's time to quit--by his behavior, even if he doesn't openly voice his opinion... As long as he knows that you're watching his back, he'll probably take in stride any aspects of the class that bothered you. (I dream of having my kids WANT to do something that requires discipline!)
Hang in there!!! By the way, I've been loving reading your updates. Thanks for doing it :-)
