Ringing in the New Year

Spelling tribulations
I have not been doing a good job studying for Ben's spelling tests. We have gotten a 7/10 and a 5/10. We worked SO hard this week... please let him get a passing grade!
His teacher requested a parent-teacher conference next week. Sigh.
Flex Holidays
We are big believers in flex holidays in our family. Rosh Hoshannah falls on a Thursday and everyone is busy? Let's celebrate on Friday! Grandparents can't get here by Friday for Christmas Eve? Santa will be coming on Sunday this year! Sometimes we use the excuse that we are celebrating the 'old Russian' version of the holiday. Especially for Easter... since Orthodox Easter falls later. We have managed to extend this rule to other holidays as well... Being flexible about holidays gives us certain advantages. For years we got our Christmas tree for free by buying one the day after Christmas. Our Easter candy is a lot cheaper the week after. Birthdays should ALWAYS fall on weekends for proper celebration.

So today I am prepping for Rosh Hoshannah dinner at Laura and Eliot's house. I am making Sangria and a Honey Cake for dessert. I have never made Sangria the same way twice... but today's recipe is as follows:
Rosh H0shannah Sangria
1 bottle cheap malbec
Juice of 3 oranges
1/3 C Mango Rum
1 bag frozen raspberries
1 bag frozen strawberries
1/4 cup black currant syrup
Halloween is coming.... halloween is coming
The boys have made their decisions... and I have spent the week gathering reference photos. Drum roll please... they are going to be Ash and Dawn from Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. Since we have a Halloween party to go to as a family Ian will be Brock
and I will be Officer Jenny.
I have downloaded reference photos, figured out what I need to make from scratch and what I can cut up, and I am off to Last Chance Thrift Shop with a long shopping list.
