Weekend Magic

Karate Decision
Thanks to everyone's advice, and after careful consideration. I decided to let Ben try this new martial arts place. The piece of advice that swayed me the most was given to me by several people that know Ben well. They reminded me that if I make the decision and he is upset about it he will find things to not like about other schools. If he starts to get frustrated at this school I can always give him the option of pulling out... and then it is his decision and he will be happier with the consequences.
Demons, Wizards, Fairies and Jedis
DragonCon, the second largest sci fi and fantasy convention in the US is held in Atlanta on Labor Day Weekend. It is HUGE. 30,000 people came this year - many of them in costume. On Saturday morning there is a parade through downtown Atlanta. There were comic book heroes, movie characters, elves from Lord of the Rings, Gandalf, Japanese manga and anime characters, zombies, pirates, Pikachu and Ash, dragon riders, a phalanx of storm troopers, the scariest Darth Vader, and a multitude of others. (Look - I'm wearing my new Vault of Midnight shirt!!)

There were over 1000 costumed participants in the parade and MANY more on the convention floor. The costumes ranged from off the shelf, to simple and home-made, to elaborate and beautifully tailored. It was truly an amazing experience. The kids eyes were HUGE as we kept seeing characters we knew...

The rest of the weekend was pretty boring in comparison - hanging out, running a few errands and doing some furniture shopping. A 3 day weekend feels just right. On Saturdays everyone is SO tired from the week... it wasn't until Monday that we all started to get energy back and want to do something fun...

It's been too long since I went to a Sci-Fi convention! I used to go to Star Trek conventions, where I met and shook hands with most of the actors from the original series. The last actor whose hand I shook was Jimmy Doohan, who played Scotty and died not too long ago. Sigh.
