Ben stayed home from school yesterday but he felt fine. Very energetic after getting to sleep in. By mid-afternoon everyone was stir crazy. Rather than putting the kids to work mopping floors we decided to go shopping for holiday decorations.... for Christmas! Nuts, I know.
The kids and I picked out:
- a 4' silver tinsel tree (pre-lit)
- a wreath, reindeer, and star made of frosted gumdrops
- a frosted gumdrop garland
- red bows with sliver glittery snowflakes
- glass ornaments that look like wrapped candies
We also bought some spray-on snow for the windows and price-shopped lawn ornaments. (We are debating between the 3 twisty trees and the reindeer that move. )
The result is every bit as kitchy and cutesy and tacky as it all sounds, candy-themed and matchy-matchy. Ian will be appalled. My mom will be appalled. I was brought up on nice Frasier firs with European ornaments and white lights. I can honestly say I'm not sure what happened. Every previous year I have looked forward to a live, tasteful tree and some simple lights on the front porch. We have a huge box of hand-made and European glass ornaments. This year I was craving something offbeat. Perhaps it is the heat of the south that has cooked my brain. Perhaps it is spending most of December without Ian that makes me want to do something completely different. But whatever the reason, the heat or the loneliness, we are going for cute kitch.
The kids are dying to start decorating now but I told them we have to wait till the day after Thanksgiving. Then we can decorate tackily to our hearts content.
