How do you get from phonics to science to math? Easy.
This morning when we were discussing the EA digraph where ea makes the short E sound (think Ed) we read the phrase "leaven bread." Ben asked what 'leaven' means. So we talked about bread and the 2 ways to leaven it (chemical and biological). This lead to a demonstration of yeast and baking soda. Which lead to a discussion of the life cycle of yeast and how it multiplies.
To demonstrate how yeast multiplies I drew 2 yeast cells, then 4, then 8, then 16, then 32. Ben asked, "What happens next"... so we kept doubling (by adding) until we had millions of yeast cells. Ben was amazed that we could keep doubling into the millions... at one point he stopped and said, "Wait a minute. We're doing MATH." Yup. And THAT is why I love homeschooling.

I think you should start on writing a book "Educating the Boys".
I think it is a time to bake wild yeast bread. Just do not forget to put very large pan under you dough pot.

Nothing to do with your yeast story - just more on red fox tale. Something is going on with this fox. Very early this morning I saw the fox running with something in its mouth chased by the crows.
I am thinking that it might have a den with cubs (or whatever the little foxes called) near by.
Before this spring, we only saw this fox very rarely and now it is so busy and reckless.
I wander if soon we will have little baby foxes chasing little baby turkeys (I already saw the first turkey chick roaming the backyard last weekend).
