Our new garden...

Ben was REALLY determined that we would have a garden this year. He worked really hard to prep the area...

The "jump on the shovel" technique helps if you don't weigh enough to drive a shovel into clay soil...

On Sunday we went to Home Depot and bought lumber and soil...

We built 2 4'x4' beds that were 10" tall and a 4'x3' wedge that was 6" tall between them...

Yes. I know. It was crazy to do. I don't know what I was thinking getting talked [read: begged] into this project. I paid for it all week.  I started crashing Monday around noon and today is the first day I feel remotely human. It drained all of my reserves and then some -- I have been barely functional... usually I have better sense than to push my limits that much... but Ben's enthusiasm was contagious and I LOVE having a garden.

That's a job for Ian to prep and then Ben can do the planting and take care of it. Better yet, get a rototiller in to prep a garden bed for planting. I can only imagine how sore you were.

Looks good!
This weekend I will (actually I will commission Yulik) to take a picture of potatoes plant growing from the small potato Ben brought from Muscoot farm last summer. It looks very cute, and I want a picture of it before one of the enemies of my garden eats it.
I am still fussing about sunflower seed he got there, can not decide when to plant it.

Georgia. Do you have a long enough growing season for sunflowers? :-) Tee hee.

I did not ask where, I asked when. I read that book too, I know I need to plant my seeds in Florida.
Have no idea, never have any luck with sunflowers, but the seed Ben brought from Muscoot farm was from the plant that grew there. Westchester and Connecticut are not that far apart.

Since they are a tender, long-season annual, I would direct-sow them around the middle of May... :-) Maybe Mother's Day?

There is a farm I pass that has a huge field of sunflowers each summer and they are everywhere here in my part of CT.

Good luck with your seeds Olga.

Yes,
that is what I think too, after Mothers day, just to be safe.
Tina, thank you, I need a lot of luck with my garden.
