Camps

This week both boys are in camp in the morning. Nikki is at camp at our local elementary school... he had a great time his first day running around with other kids and doing craft projects.

Ben decided to do a soccer camp at the last minute (last night at 8pm). Ben has never wanted to play soccer... but when he heard that many of his friends were going to be in the soccer camp he decided to try it. The camp is run by two local teenagers and for 2 hours they teach basic skills, tricks, and have scrimmages. Ben really enjoyed his first day and came home very excited about the soccer trick he learned.

Both boys have decided that next year they want to do 'real' camp. What's real camp I asked them? You know, the kind where you sleep over in cabins... so apparently they are doing sleep away camp next summer. Where do they get these things? Neither Ian nor I were huge camp fans... but the kids have been looking forward to camp for months.

Me? I'm working on making a summer kimono for a robe and a mural on the kid's lego area.

So, you are not going to soccer camp? You are making a kimono! How quaint.

I'm trying out techniques so I can figure out what costume to make for Dragon Con.

I always went away to Y camp for a month and just loved it. Tami used to go to girl scout camp and loved it. Most overnight camps have a minimum age of 7 so I think Nik has a couple of years to wait.

I have an idea. You and Tami can teach at ALPS and put the kids in the overnight camp that she has her eye on for the girls in NH.

What is Dragon Con?

Olga,

ALPS is Dartmouth's 10 day intense summer immersion language prgram. They have 2 sessions each summer and each session offers about 5 different languages - Russian, French, Spanish, Chinese are some. I went the summer of 1995 and took French and it was the experience of a lifetime! I just loved every minute of it. Tami worked at ALPS during her Dartmouth summers. She also worked at it the summer she was pregnant and the summer that Katya was almost 2.

Hope this is helpful. Check it out on Dartmouth's website.

Dragon*Con is a geeky convention that is held in Atlanta every year... people who are into all sorts of science fiction, fantasy, animation, etc gather together, listen to talks, and get dressed up as their favorite characters. Think Halloween for geeks crossed with Star Trek convention. The boys love to go to the parade each year.
