Karate injuries and bleeding scouts

On Tuesday the parents got to participate in Ben's karate class. We got to practice punches and kicks, do situps, and spar. We had some races. We worked in pairs. Ben had a great time. It was fun to see how intense the kids were about it.
Unfortunately my back did not fare so well -- we had to do 10 pushups with the kids on our backs. OUCH.

Bloody Boyscouts
Our den meeting was on Tuesday, too. We made first aid kits and the boys (and siblings) painted panels for a den flag. We also practiced what you should do in a medical emergency -- shout for help and get a grownup. We also talked about treating a cut.
I divided the boys into pairs. Half of the boys came into the kitchen to get blood (ketchup) liberally applied to their arms. They then ran outside and pretended to lie on the grass, hurt. Oh the drama! I think I should be holding a drama club instead of scouts. The moaning, rolling, and wailing was hysterical. The rescuers came out with sterile gauze to apply pressure to the wounds. They applied the unopened packages. :-) After being reminded that the gauze part was INSIDE the package they all sat and carefully comforted their friends and applied pressure. Then they licked the rest of the ketchup off of their arms. :-) Boys.
