Apparently Nik's kindergarten class read a book about sharing and then paired up and proceeded to exchange shoes. His 2 friends, Ellie and Amanda, tried to exchange shoes but Amanda had a much larger shoe size than Ellie, so Ellie's shoes did not fit. Therefor Nik's mystery friend is one of these two girls...
If we further analyze the conversation we can eliminate Ellie as the new friend because Ellie is on Nik's soccer team... so Nik's new friend is Amanda.
