The Cup

There is a question that is weighing on my mind even more than our impending homelessness... What will I wear to THE CUP?
Cocktail length or tea?
Black and white or floral?
Hat or fascinator?
And how on earth am I to go shopping with two boys in tow??!
Only 6 days left to figure it all out!

I am trying to get the boys rallied to do a little shopping this afternoon... at the very least we need to get daddy a tie...

**Update**
I have a really unusual designer dress. The millinery shop is customizing a hat to go with it. The hat is festooned with gray and black feather and that is ALL I will say. Stay tuned next TUESDAY for photos.

The cup is The Melbourne Cup... a horse race that is so major that it is a national holiday! And we have tickets!!

Fancy!
And a lot of roses too, and you can even win a price for your dress!
I just checked the Wikipedia.

Being in the heart of horse country, and knowing the Kentucky Derby, I can say that the Cup looks to be much more refined with less drunken debauchery in the infield. Their betting system is a bit different with an option of fixed or variable odds, and you don't bet on a horse to "show" (win,place,show=1st,2nd,3rd in the US), but a "place" bet includes 2nd and 3rd. I do love the idea of a $3 "mystery box trifecta", which lets a computer randomly pick three horses for you. It's like throwing darts at a board blindfolded, only winning more often than I do.

There are 4 areas for the cup: the corporate area, the expensive area, the inexpensive area, and the famous-people area. Apparently the inexpensive area is full of very-well-dressed people drinking way to much and getting into fights whereas the corporate area is full of very-well-dressed people drinking too much.

I am usually pretty good at picking which horses will show but I have never gotten up the courage to bet... and given how much I just spent on a dress and a hat I am not sure this is the time to start.

We have hired a sitter to watch our kids and a co-worker's kids. Because it is a holiday we are paying her $25/hour!!

Golden kids they will be!
At least you found somebody to watch them.
I did not get a word in Jason's e-mail or your response about betting on horses.
"My Fair Lady" is my only exposure to the horse racing. (I do not count Anna Karenina, it is too awful).

Which area are you sitting in?
It looks like all of them well watered.
Well, may be you can recover your expenses for the dress and the hat if you bet just right.
And making of the hat reminds me of "Howl's Moving Castle", very cute.

You only live once and deserve a really special non-kid time out. Are the tickets in the corporate area? I'm sure it will be a real memorable time. Allow yourself some fun money to place a bet or two. Can't wait to read all about it.

Did you buy a cocktail type dress?

The milliner's shop was amazing. The worktables are right in the middle of the shop so you can see the baskets of feather and other accessories and the 3 ladies sitting and working on hats. I may try to get a picture of the shop when I go back to pick up my hat.

The dress is slightly shorter than cocktail length... it has a black empire top with architectural zippers and a gray, silk, crepe georgette skirt. It comes to just above knee length on me.
