My children are outside playing what can best be described as Calvinball. Remember Calvin and Hobbes? They played a game that had a bizarre and ever-changing set of rules...
A couple of days ago I bought the kids 2 small rubber balls. That afternoon we invented a game that involved standing in a triangle, passing the ball around, and counting. In just a couple of days the game has evolved so that it now involves: bases, hiding places, various kinds of hopping and counting, going backwards, singing, random running around and a LOT of arguing over rules and boundaries.
Why do all child-invented sports and games involve spending at least 50% of the time arguing over the rules?

Because the rules rule!
